Outlook on the Web can be used by anyone whose account is on Microsoft's Office 365 service. You can choose to use Outlook on the Web exclusively. Or you can use it when you're away from your own computer, and use another email application, such as Outlook or Apple Mail, the rest of the time.

Please note that your college, unit, or department may require that you use a particular method to access your Cornell email and calendar. Your IT or computer support staff can advise you about any requirements or recommendations.

Manage Your Email and Calendar on the Web

Manage Your Email and Calendar with Outlook for Windows or Mac

Outlook is an email/calendar app that is installed on your computer. It is designed specifically for Cornell's Office 365 email and calendar system.

  • Outlook 2016 for Windows comes with Microsoft Office 2016.
  • Outlook 2016 for Mac comes with Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac.

Outlook offers powerful ways to integrate your email, calendar, task lists, and address book, and many options for organizing your email. It also provides flexible, secure ways to enable other people to manage your email and calendar.

Outlook looks very much like Outlook on the web, a service for viewing your email on the web. That's beneficial because, for the most part, you only need to learn one of these applications to efficiently use any of them.

You can use your Android, iOS, or other smartphone to manage your Cornell email and calendar.

Other Ways to Manage Your Cornell Email

If none of the university-supported ways to read your Cornell email meets your needs, you can choose one of the two options below.

These methods will not work with Two-Step Login and cannot be supported by the IT Service Desk.
  • Use any email application that supports the IMAP email protocol. Please understand that you're responsible for installing and configuring the email application on your own, and doing your own troubleshooting if problems arise. Here are the settings you'll need to find in your client's configuration. (Microsoft's E-mail Setup Wizard for Office 365 may be helpful.)
  • Your username is typically your netid or netid@cornell.edu
    (for example, pqs665 or pqs665@cornell.edu).
  • Set the IMAP server to
    outlook.office365.com
    use port 993
    and set the encryption to SSL/TLS.
  • Set the SMTP server to
    smtp.office365.com
    use port 587
    and set the encryption to STARTTLS.
  • To connect to Cornell's Electronic Directory, locate the Directory Server area of your client's configuration options.
    • Set hostname to directory.cornell.edu
    • Set base DN to
      o=Cornell University,c=US
      Please note: The Base DN entry begins with a lowercase letter 'o' not a zero.
      There is no space before or after the comma.
    • Set port to 389.
  • Forward your Cornell email to a non-Cornell email account. Be sure to note the university's guidelines about situations in which you should not forward your Cornell email.

What is the maximum file size I can email as an attachment?

The maximum file size is 25 MB if you are sending the attachment via Outlook or Webmail. To send larger attachments up to 35GB, use the File Transfer Service.

What is the 'Clutter' folder in my email account?

Clutter is a feature designed to move low priority messages out of your inbox and into their own folder, saving you time when you scan for important messages. Once you activate it, Clutter looks at what you've done in the past to determine the messages you’re most likely to ignore. It then moves those messages to a folder in your inbox called Clutter items.

The Clutter items folder will be available regardless of how you access your account. Clutter and junk email are both filtered out before they reach your inbox. Junk email is evaluated first, and filtered based on the characteristics of the messages themselves, for example the subject or the server it was sent from. Next, Clutter analyzes the remaining messages destined for your inbox, and filters out the types of messages that you usually ignore or don't respond to, based on your past behavior.

How do I search for NYP contacts in Outlook/Webmail?

NYP did not migrate to Office 365 for its email system, so it is no longer possible to search for NYP contacts using the Global Address Book in Outlook or Webmail.

If you are a WCMC employee and you need to search for an NYP contact, you have two options:

  1. Search for the NYP contact with the WCMC Directory.
  2. Connect to the LDAP Directory. LDAP is an additional directory that will allow your mail client (Outlook for Mac, Outlook for Windows, Apple Mail) to search for NYP contacts. View the 'Guide' section of the O365 Email & Calendar page for more information on how to connect to LDAP.
